50-50 E-Liquid

VG and PG. Two base liquids that every e-liquid is made from, mixed in different proportions depending on what the liquid is supposed to do.

VG (vegetable glycerine) is the thick one. It produces vapour. The more VG in a blend, the denser the clouds. It also carries a faint natural sweetness and makes the liquid more viscous.

PG (propylene glycol) is the thin one. It carries flavour more effectively than VG and provides throat hit. Higher PG means sharper flavour clarity and a firmer sensation on the inhale.

50/50 splits them evenly. You get decent flavour clarity from the PG side, a moderate amount of vapour from the VG side, and a viscosity that flows through small wicking ports without clogging or flooding. Not the biggest clouds. Not the sharpest throat hit. But the best balance for low-wattage devices, and that is what matters.

Other ratios exist. 70/30 and 80/20 VG-heavy blends are designed for sub-ohm tanks and high-wattage kits where the coils can handle thick liquid. Those do not belong in pod kits. Pour a 70/30 into a 1.0ohm pod coil and the cotton dries out between draws because the liquid is too thick to keep up. Dry hits within minutes. 50/50 avoids that entirely.

Freebase or Nic Salt at 50/50?

Both come in 50/50. The ratio is the same. The nicotine type is the difference, and it affects how the liquid feels in your throat and how quickly the nicotine satisfies.

Nic salt 50/50 is smooth even at 20mg. Absorbs quickly, satisfies in fewer draws, best for ex-smokers and people coming off disposables. Most of the nic salt range runs 50/50 by default, so if you are buying nic salts, you are almost certainly already getting a 50/50 blend.

Freebase 50/50 has a sharper throat hit at the same strength. Available at lower concentrations like 3mg, 6mg, and 12mg. Works for vapers who want a noticeable throat sensation without going to high nicotine, or for anyone who has already stepped down from nic salt strengths and prefers a lighter approach.

Quick rule of thumb: if you want 10mg or 20mg, go nic salt. If you want 3mg, 6mg, or 0mg, freebase is fine. At 12mg, either works, but freebase at 12mg has a decent kick to it, which some people like and others find a bit much.

Who Is 50/50 E-Liquid For?

Basically anyone with a refillable pod kit or a low-wattage MTL device. That is a lot of people.

Pod kit users. If you own a compact refillable device and fill it from a bottle, 50/50 is the default recommendation. The coils in those kits are designed around this viscosity. Everything works the way it should: wicking, flavour, coil longevity.

Ex-smokers and disposable switchers. A 50/50 nic salt at 20mg in a pod kit is the closest you will get to the draw and satisfaction of a cigarette or a disposable, without the combustion or the waste. The ratio keeps the draw tight and smooth. Exactly what most people are after.

MTL vapers generally. Mouth-to-lung is the style where you draw vapour into your mouth first and then inhale, like a cigarette. MTL vape kits use higher-resistance coils and lower wattage, both of which suit thinner liquid. 50/50 is the standard here.

Vapers who burn through coils fast. Thick VG-heavy liquids gum up coil cotton faster because VG is harder to vapourise cleanly. The PG in a 50/50 blend is thinner and burns cleaner, which usually means a few extra days of coil life. Not a massive difference on any single pod, but across a month it adds up.

Who should probably skip 50/50? Sub-ohm vapers. Cloud chasers. Anyone running a mod at 40W or above with coils below 0.5ohm. Those setups need thicker liquid to keep up with the vapour production, and 50/50 is too thin. You will get flooding, spitback, and a weaker draw. Stick to 70/30 or higher VG for that gear.

Fruit and ice still dominate. They translate well through MTL coils at low wattage, and the 50/50 ratio lets the PG side carry the flavour detail cleanly. Watermelon ice, mango, blue razz, strawberry kiwi. Familiar territory.

Menthol is underrated at 50/50. The PG delivers a sharper cooling hit than you get from a VG-heavy blend, so menthol flavours at this ratio feel crisper and more defined. If you have only tried menthol in a high-VG liquid, try it at 50/50 and see the difference. Honestly noticeable.

Dessert profiles carry well too. Caramel, custard, cookies, cream. The PG side keeps them from going muddy, which sometimes happens in thicker blends where the flavour layers collapse into one vague sweetness. Fair warning though: dessert liquids still gunk coils faster than fruit or menthol regardless of ratio.

Tobacco sits where it always sits. Steady sellers, not flashy, not trying to be. A 50/50 tobacco at 12mg freebase through an MTL kit is one of the closest experiences to an actual cigarette that vaping offers. Menthol tobacco is the popular crossover.

Drinks and candy fill out the range. Cola, lemonade, bubblegum, energy drink. Less common but persistent.

Which Devices Handle 50/50 Best?

Any kit with coils above 0.6ohm running below about 18W is the sweet spot. The coil has to wick a relatively thin liquid, and if the resistance and wattage sit in that bracket, the 50/50 blend moves through the cotton at the right pace.

That describes most refillable pod kits on the market. Compact kits from Vaporesso, Uwell, OXVA, SMOK, and Aspire all work. Innokin's smaller pen devices handle 50/50 well. If the device came with a 0.8ohm or 1.0ohm coil in the box, the manufacturer already expects you to use this ratio.

Some kits ship with two coils: a higher-resistance MTL option and a lower-resistance coil for a looser draw. Use 50/50 with the higher-resistance option. The lower-resistance coil, usually 0.4ohm or 0.3ohm, sits closer to DTL territory and handles 60/40 or 70/30 better.

Sub-ohm tanks and box mods running at 30W or above? Not for 50/50. The liquid is too thin, the coils pull too much through, and you end up with flooding and liquid spitting back through the drip tip. Run thicker e-liquids at 70/30 or above in that gear.

Filling Your Pod With 50/50

50/50 is thinner than high-VG liquid, so it flows faster out of the bottle. Go slowly.

Tilt the nozzle against the inside wall of the pod, well away from the central airflow column. Fill to just under the max line. 50/50 floods more easily than thicker blends if you overfill, because the lower viscosity means it seeps into gaps that a 70/30 would not reach. Leave a small air pocket at the top, and you avoid the gurgling.

New pod or new coil? Let it sit for five minutes after filling. The cotton is usually organic and needs time to absorb from both sides of the wicking port. Firing too early scorches the cotton permanently. No recovering from that.

A couple of dry pulls help. Inhale gently without pressing the fire button. That creates a slight vacuum that draws liquid into the wick. Then start at the lowest wattage your device offers and increase by a watt or two until the flavour comes through properly.

Making Your 50/50 Last

• Coil life and liquid consumption are the two running costs with any refillable kit. 50/50 is kind to both if you treat it right.

• Keep the pod topped up. The cotton needs to stay wet. Vaping a pod down to the last few drops exposes bare cotton to heat, which chars it and kills the coil early. Top up before it gets low.

• Sweet liquids cost more in coils. Dessert flavours, candy profiles, anything with heavy sweetener builds a dark residue on the coil faster. If you like those flavours, fine, just know that alternating with a cleaner fruit or menthol flavour between refills adds a couple of extra days to the coil.

• Avoid chain vaping. Five or six rapid draws in a row dries the wick faster than it can re-saturate, especially with 50/50 where the liquid moves quickly but the cotton still has a finite absorption speed. A few seconds between draws makes a real difference.

• Store bottles upright, sealed, at room temperature, out of sunlight. 50/50 does not separate easily, but heat degrades the nicotine and dulls the flavour over a few weeks. Buy what you will use in the next month or so.
