MTL stands for mouth-to-lung, the style where you draw vapour into your mouth first, then breathe it in, exactly like a cigarette. An MTL tank is the refillable tank that delivers that draw.
It screws onto a mod or battery, holds e-liquid in a small reservoir, and heats it through a replaceable coil. Airflow is tight and adjustable, and the coils sit at a higher resistance than sub-ohm heads.
The result is a warm, restrained vape with a firm throat hit and modest vapour. Quiet, discreet and easy on liquid.
How Do MTL Tanks Differ From Sub-Ohm Tanks?
The split comes down to draw and power. MTL tanks pull tight and run gently; sub-ohm tanks pull wide open and run hot for clouds.
#table
: MTL tank: Sub-ohm (DTL) tank
Draw: Tight, cigarette-like: Open and airy
Coil resistance: Roughly 0.7Ω to 1.8Ω: Below 0.5Ω
Power: About 8W to 20W: 40W and up
E-liquid: 50/50 or higher PG, nic salts: High-VG shortfills
Vapour: Modest: Big clouds
Liquid and battery: Sips both: Drinks both
If you want lungfuls of vapour, you want the sub-ohm side. If you want a satisfying hit that mimics a roll-up and lasts all day, MTL is the one. Plenty of tanks now bridge the two with adjustable airflow, but a true MTL tank is happiest at the tight end.
What Coils Do MTL Tanks Use?
MTL coils sit high compared to cloud coils, usually somewhere between 0.7Ω and 1.8Ω. The higher the resistance, the tighter and cooler the draw.
Power stays low to match. Most MTL vaping lives in the 8W to 20W band, with the tightest cigarette-style draws down near the bottom of that.
Coils are brand-locked, so a tank takes its own family: Nautilus heads for an Aspire Nautilus, the Z-coil range for an Innokin Zenith, and so on. They are sold separately, and you will find the right ones in our vape coils section.
Which E-Liquid Suits an MTL Tank?
MTL tanks want thinner liquid than sub-ohm tanks. A 50/50 blend or something higher in PG wicks cleanly through the narrow ports and carries a sharper throat hit.
That makes them ideal for nic salts at up to 20mg, which stay smooth even at higher strength, and for freebase liquids in tobacco and menthol if you are chasing a cigarette substitute. A 50/50 e-liquid is the safe default if you are unsure.
Thick, high-VG shortfills are the wrong call. They wick too slowly through an MTL coil, muffle the flavour, and clog the wick fast. Keep those for a sub-ohm tank.
What Should You Look For When Choosing One?
A good MTL tank gets a few basics right. Prioritise these over looks.
- Filling. A slide or twist top-fill beats unscrewing the base every time, and it leaks less.
- Airflow. Adjustable airflow lets you tune from a tight cigarette draw to a looser restricted one.
- Coil availability. Pick a tank whose coils are cheap and easy to find, or you will regret it in a month.
- Build. Stainless steel with Pyrex or borosilicate glass takes knocks far better than thin plastic sections.
- Size. Most MTL tanks run 22mm to 24mm, which sits neatly on smaller mods.
You will also need something to run it on. A simple variable-wattage device does the job, and our vape mods cover the options. If you would rather not pair pieces yourself, a matched MTL vape kit bundles the tank and battery together.
Which MTL Tanks Are Worth Knowing?
A handful of names come up again and again, and for good reason.
The Aspire Nautilus line, the Nautilus 3, 3S and 2S, is the long-standing reference for MTL flavour, built around one of the deepest coil ranges in the category. Innokin's Zenith and Zlide are the other mainstays, loved for easy slide or twist filling and the reliable Z-coil family.
For vapers who like to tinker, MTL rebuildables let you wind your own coil and wick for the freshest flavour, though they ask for more patience and know-how. Whichever way you lean, the live grid shows what is in stock right now.
How Do You Fill and Set Up an MTL Tank?
Setting up an MTL tank takes a couple of minutes once you have done it once.
- Screw the tank onto a charged mod or battery with a standard 510 thread.
- Fit a fresh coil, priming it first with a few drops of e-liquid on the exposed cotton.
- Open the top-fill and pour e-liquid down the inside wall, keeping clear of the central airflow tube.
- Close it up and stand the tank upright for ten minutes so the coil fully soaks.
- Set the power low to begin, around 10W to 15W, with the airflow slightly open.
- Take gentle draws, then fine-tune airflow and wattage until the draw feels right.
Skipping the soak is the quickest way to burn a coil on day one, so give it the full ten minutes. New to this? The vaping guides walk through filling and priming in detail.
Are MTL Tanks Legal in the UK?
Yes, and they are exactly the sort of reusable kit the rules favour. Since single-use disposables were banned from sale on 1 June 2025, the compliant setup is a rechargeable battery, a refillable tank and a replaceable coil, which is the MTL tank formula to a tee.
The tank section is capped at 2ml here, topped up from bottles no larger than 10ml at a maximum of 20mg per ml. You buy the coils and liquid separately, which is what keeps the running cost so low.
Compliant is not the same as safe, and none of this is a health claim. It only means the hardware meets the current UK framework, and everything we carry is genuine UK-market stock.
